1: Yehoweh’s Messenger ascends from the Stone circle (ha Gilgal) to the Sobbing (Ha bokkim). Phew!
And He says, “ I caused to ascend from Egypt and I caused to traverse to the land which I had been sworn to to your fathers.”
And I say, “ No cause to dissolve My Covenant with you forever.
2: And all of Yous: No cutting a covenant with the permanent residents of this, The land – Their altars you cast down.”
And you had not listened to My Voice!
What is this you had done!
3: And then I said, “ No expatriation of them from (in front of) your face. They were being (haya) on your sides and their gods are (haya) a bait-hook to you.
4: And so it happens that these Yehoweh’s Messenger’s emphatic spoken words are to the sons of Israel.
And the people raise their voices and weep (va-yi-bukku).
5: And they call the name of that place (Bokkim).
And they sacrifice there to Yehoweh. Phew!
6: And Joshua sends forth the people. And the sons of Israel walk forth to their inheritance to possess / dispossess The Land.
7: And the people serve Yehoweh all of Joshua’s days and all the days of the elders who had longer days after Joshua, who had seen all of Yehoweh’s great work which He had done for Israel.
8: And Joshua son of Nun (sapling propogation), Yehoweh’s servant, dies – a son of a hundred and ten years.
9: And they bury (‘Cover’) him within the territory of his inheritance – at Timna (mana- portion) Keres (itchy sunburn) – in Ephraim’s north (Tsafon) mountain – on Mount Gaash (Quake).
10: And then all that generation are gathered to their fathers.
And another generation takes a stand after them who did not discern / acknowledge Yehoweh and also the work He had done for Israel.
Pause and think about that!
11: And the sons of Israel create The Bad / Trouble / Evil in Yehoweh’s eyes and serve The lords.
12: And they forsake Yehoweh, God of their fathers, The One Who made them traverse out of the land of Egypt.
And they walk after other gods, others from the gods of the people who surrounded them and they make themselves bow themselves and they make Yehoweh angered.
13: And they forsake Yehoweh and they serve a lord and richness (Ashtaroths).
14: And Yehoweh’s nostrils burned (anger kindle) against Israel. And He gave them to the plunderers’ hand and they plundered them.
And He sold them to their encircling enemies.
And they could not stand (up) to their enemies’ face any longer.
15: Everywhere they went Yehoweh’s hand happened to be against them for Bad / Trouble / Evil (Ra’ah) which was as Yehoweh had said and which was as Yehoweh had sworn to them.
And they are greatly constrained.
16: And Yehoweh caused Judges to stand up and they caused them to be saved from the plunderers’ hand.
17: And again they did not listen to their judges and prostituted behind other gods, making themselves bow themselves down to others, hastily turned aside from the way which their fathers had walked for they had not committed to discerning Yehoweh’s commandments.
18: And if Yehoweh caused Judges to be raised up for them and it happened that Yehoweh was with the judge and caused them to be saved from the hand of their enemies for all the days of the judge- for Yehoweh was sorry for their groans in front of their oppressor and their dispellers,
19: But when the judge happened to die, they turn back and they caused more ruin than their fathers by walking after other gods, to serve them and to make themselves bow themselves to them and did not put down what they were doing and their hard ways.
20: And Yehoweh’s nostrils burn (anger kindles) against Israel and He says, “Because of what this unbelieving nation had crossed over in My Covenant which I had appointed to their fathers and not discerned My Voice,
21: I also will not cause an increased dispossessing of a man before them from the unbelieving nations when Joshua died and had left
22: in order that I test Israel through them – they who discern The Way of Yehoweh, walking in them as their fathers had watched or not.”
23: And Yehoweh caused these nations to be let alone. These were not hastily cast out and were not given into Joshua’s hand. Phew!
Prayer:
What a tragedy that every generation keeps forgetting You and worshipping other lords and gods and riches. And so when Israel is persecuted or the church is persecuted, when we always have enemies around us, we wonder why You haven’t saved us from them. Send us a Judge, we pray. Soften our nation’s heart, the persecuted church’s heart to repent, we pray. Amen.
