Exodus 20: El Kana’s Instruction pro-life, pro-rest, pro-marriage, pro-parent, pro-friend, Manual for loving and obeying Him

1: And God uttered all These (following) words saying –

Stop and think! –

2: “ I, Yehoweh, your God, who caused you to be drawn out of the land of Egypt, from a house of slaveries,

3: He does not happen other gods for you before My Face.

4: He does not make engravings (paysel – same word to Moses for the 2 boards in Exod 34:1,4 – for an unchangeable / uneditable carving or cutting or writing) of you and pictures of all which are of heaven above and which are of earth below and which are of water under the earth.

5: You do not cause yourself to prostrate to them and cause you to serve them. For I, Yehoweh, your God am ‘Jealous God’ (El Kana), appointing-to-hold-to-account the father’s punishable sins over the sons above a third; and above a fourth of My haters.

6: And I make loving kindness for thousands of my lovers and commandment watchers.

Pause.

7: You do not lift The Name of Yehoweh your God in falsehood for he is not guiltless to Yehoweh who takes His Name falsely.

Pause.

8: Remembering the Stop (seventh) day to keep it holy.

9: Six days you labour (avad – slavery) and do all your production (malak – messenger -producing),

10: and on the seventh day, the stopping (sabbath) to Yehoweh your God, you do not make production – you and your son and your daughter, your bondsman (avad) and your servant maid (amma*) and your livestock and your immigrant who is in your gates.

11: For in six days Yehoweh made The heavens and The earth and The water and all that is in them and He rested (Noah) on the seventh day. And so then Yehoweh blessed the stopping day and makes it holy.

Pause.

12: Glorify (kavod) your father and your mother in order that your days are lengthened on the soil (adamah) which Yehoweh your God is giving you.

Pause.

13: Don’t you murder (ratsek).

Pause.

14: Don’t you be unfaithful in marriage.

Pause.

15: Don’t you steal /deceive.

Pause.

16: Don’t you answer your neighbour/friend/fellow with a false witness.

Pause.

17: Don’t you covet your friend’s house. Don’t you covet your friend’s woman/wife. Your friend’s bondsman and his servant maid*, and his ox and his donkey and all which is your friend’s.

Phew!

18: And all the people were seeing the hullabaloo and the flashes and the voice of the shofar and the smoking mountain. And the people see and shake and stand afar.

19: And they say to Moses, “You speak with us and we’ll hear. But (let) not God speak with us lest we die.

20: And Moses says to the people, “Do not fear. God came for the intent of testing you. To intend for His Fear to be in your face, for you to be without sinning.

21: And so the people stand afar and Moses draws near the thick darkness where God was. Phew!

22: And Yehoweh says to Moses, “Say thus to the sons of Israel: You saw that I talked from heaven with you.

23: Do not make a silver god of me and do not make for yourselves a gold god.

24: Make an earth (adamah) altar for me. And you slaughter sacrificed on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings and your sheep and your oxen in every place where I cause to remember My Name. I come to you and I bless you.

25: And if you make an altar of stones for Me, don’t you build it with cut stone. For the carving tool you caused to wield, causes to profane over it.

26: And dont  be going up by steps to My altar. Which (should) not (let) your nakedness be exposed over it. Phew!

Prayer: El Kana, Jealous Yehoweh the only uneditable chiselling on stone was the law on tablets – not pictures of you, not cut altar stones. You have strange priorities and nit picky details focussed on love and obedience to You, 1:7 rest, pro-life, pro-marriage, pro- family, pro- friends. You test us with fearfulness of You with the intention of preventing us from sinning. And You want to be interacting with us – not a silent, powerless, unmoved idol. And you don’t like hierarchy because it exposes ugliness. May I be up in the mountains speaking with You, O God whom I love. May I not be shrinking away from You or fearful of hearing You. Amen.
